Spirit, hunting and gathering transports guests into the way the San people hunt, dance and live till today. This guided tour takes guests through the Way of the San exhibit which is an incredible display of the hunter gatherer lifestyle that is still upheld by many San people.

Reading the signs – a game drive accompanied by a stop to identify and read animal prints.

Veld pharmacy –  A walk through our wild herb garden accompanied by a knowledgeable guide who will teach our guests about the different uses and medicinal properties of these wild herbs .

Our food from our ancestor’s tour takes our guests on a short trail/walk filled with local herbs and plants that the San use for cooking and medicinal purposes. Guests will learn how they can use the local West Coast veld herbs during a fire cooking experience at the village.  Followed by a guided experience through our First People Museum where guests will see the archeological evidence that show us how the San people ate and lived.  What tools they used and how they expressed their creativity.

Our Veld Pharmacy tour includes the cumulative knowledge of many generations on medicinal properties of plants.  Our guests get the chance to taste our own home blend of teas made from some of the wild herbs grown in our nursery. As guests walk through our wild herb garden, they will learn which veld herbs can be utilized for cooking and which has medicinal properties. Our Wellness tea is a blend of Rooibos, cancerbush, ‘wilde als’, wild dagga and buchu.

Our restaurant now offers meals that tell a story of the San, of how they ate what was available at the exact time and place they were. We have made sure to source our ingredients form local producers who farm sustainably and who share our values. As the San respected nature, we strive to do the same, in where we source our ingredients to how we use every part of it in our kitchen or garden. Our venison, beans and Suurvygie dish is a great representation of the values we strive towards. Our venison is from !Khwa ttu, marinated in a mixture of wild garlic mead, Kei apple vinegar and a fermented pepper paste. Topped with a suurvygie chutney grown and produced on our premises. Our beans, and all our vegetables are grown locally and most is organic as well. The dish also includes maize ‘chips’ made from organic yellow maize meal.

We have a delicious vegan cauliflower dish on our menu – spiced roasted cauliflower served on millet ‘pap’ with sultanas and finished with a vegetable jus made with kelp for a deeper complexity of flavour.

Over the past year we have moved away from large producers and we have set out to find the small businesses who look after the earth whilst producing crafted products that we can offer to our guests. Every producer we have met has been an experience to remember. These experiences flow into the stories that our guests enjoy during their meal and enriches the experience here at !Khwa ttu. Some of the special items we have found includes Kokerboom cheeses crafted by David Malan in Velddrif. Our mushrooms are grown by Koti van Tonder in old army bunkers just outside Darling. Most of our vegetables are from Goedverwacht community who have set up a non-profit organization to assist the residence to efficiently plant and sell organic produce, an incredible experience to see how well the community works together to plant a large variety of fruits and vegetables and definitely worth a visit.

We have set out on a continuous journey of discovery; we are committed to keep expanding our knowledge about indigenous plants and how to serve it to our guests in a way that is exciting and new.

Our hope is that our guests will leave !khwa ttu with some extra knowledge around how to use the plants they find around them in their food and to create a culture of awareness when it comes to our indigenous plants. Our green team led by Hendreas Vaalbooi and Elsje Deetlefs work on discovering more about our indigenous plants, Hendreas has a passion for natural remedies and have been interested in the medicinal properties of plants from a very young age, Hendreas also has a trained eye for bulbs and tubers hidden underground with very little foliage above ground to be identified from. Elsje has a botanical background and a great love for indigenous plants. Elsje assists with growing our veld herb gardens and ensuring that we are only planting indigenous plants on the farm to restore the natural landscape of our area.
