Bacon & Fig Braaibroodjie
Everyone has their own “special way” of making a braai broodjie, passed down through generations and typically a recipe never to be tampered with. This year I’ve decided to make life a little interesting and play around with how I prepare my braaibroodjies.
This braaibroodjie is definitely NOT traditional but it might turn out to be the highlight of your next braai!
The Ultimate Braai Broodjie
- 4 Ciabatta Rolls
- Jar of fig preserve (or jam)
- 250 gram, smoked bacon strips, precooked
- 1 cup Cheddar Cheese, grated
- 1 cup mozzarella cheese, grated
- Butter, unsalted
Making the Braaibroodjies
Slice open each Ciabatta roll and spread the inside with butter.
If you are using fig preserve, slice the figs and add as many slices as you’d like to each roll. If you are using a jam instead, make sure to add a nice layer of fig jam.
Next, add the par cooked smoked bacon strips to cover the fig preserve/jam
Evenly divide the cheddar cheese between the 4 rolls
For the final touch, divide the mozzarella cheese between the four rolls
Finally, set aside and once your braai coals have reached medium temperature, place the ciabattas on a braai grid and cook until golden brown on both sides and the cheese has melted.
