Time For A Braai: Easy Microwave Pap

Summer are for spending time outdoors, family gatherings, good food, fresh air and festive cheer. And in this country all of that happens mostly around the braai. Whether you prefer snoek, steak, boerewors or a juicy lamb chop, South Africans love a braai. But a braai is not only meat and beer, and in this issue Riette Strydom of Country Kitchen Caterers in Velddrif has a few suggestions for easy-to-prepare side dishes.

Microwave Pap

This is one of the best recipes that can be made in a microwave. There is no cleaning of a burnt pap pot and the taste is exactly the same as that made on the stove or fire. This recipe can be adjusted for breakfast porridge (slappap), normal mealie pap and pupu pap (krummelpap).

Method 1 ( for Slap pap)

  • Pour boiling water in a large microwave glass dish.
  • Add the salt.
  • Put butter in the water and let it melt.
  • Mix cold water and maize meal together. Add the maize meal mix to hot water and give it a stir.
  • Cover and put in microwave for 15 minutes on high. Give it a good stir with a fork after every 5 minute interval.
  • Let rest in microwave for 5 minutes.
  • Remove and give a good stir with a fork.
  • Serve with butter, sugar and milk.

Method 2 (for Pap)

  • Pour boiling water in a large microwave glass dish.
  • Add the salt.
  • Put half of the butter in the water and let it melt.
  • Add maize meal and give it a stir.
  • Cover and put in microwave for 20 minutes on high.
  • Give it a good stir with a fork after 10 minutes.
  • Let rest in microwave for 10 minutes.
  • Remove and give it a good stir with a fork.
  • If you want you want to add some sweat corn, you can do it now
  • Stir through and put dollops of the remaining butter on the pap
  • Cover and microwave for another 5 minutes
  • Stir through and enjoy.

Method 3 (for Putu Pap)

  • Pour boiling water into a large microwave glass dish.
  • Add the salt.
  • Put half of the butter in the water and let it melt.
  • Add maize meal and give it a stir.
  • Cover and put in the microwave for 20 minutes on high.
  • Give it a good stir with a fork after 10 minutes.
  • Let rest in microwave for 10 minutes.
  • Remove and give it a good stir with a fork.
  • Put dollops of the remaining butter on the pap.
  • Cover and microwave for another 5 minutes.
  • Stir through and enjoy.
